This summer, I joined the Discretionary AI team. I was tasked with developing a dataset by building and deploying a web scraping pipeline that would run monthly, so it had to be resilient and easy to configure. I built off a complex internal framework for ETL pipelines, spending considerable time diving into documentation, investigating the sites to scrape, and building production-grade code. Coding to these expectations, navigating a huge existing codebase, and working with (or sometimes around) design decisions beyond my control were all new skills that I acquired. I also gained many technical skills - the only skill I had initially was the ability to write Python! I never felt overwhelmed, thanks to the support from my mentor, team, fellow interns, and honestly everyone else I met. The culture is lovely; I never felt embarrassed to ask a question. I loved being immersed in a real project and truly felt like a respected member of the team - a feeling most internships don't provide! I'll also miss the fun monthly Tech Talks and socials!

I joined the Order Management and Analytics team within the Front Office Engineering division. My project involved developing a proxy to support many-to-many FIX communication enabling a wide array of previously impossible automated testing workflows. Setting up the project from scratch has been a valuable learning experience, allowing me to learn new tools like Docker, Jenkins, Ansible, Terraform, Prometheus, and Grafana, while also extending my knowledge in Spring Boot and Gradle.
My team has been incredibly supportive, providing guidance and feedback throughout the project. I'm grateful for the opportunity to grow my skills in such a collaborative and innovative environment. I've also found it incredibly interesting to talk to my colleagues about their projects and learn about the work they're doing.

I had the opportunity to join the Discretionary Public Credit Technology team, working with the Convertible Arbitrage trading desk. My project aimed to automate and streamline the trading team’s workflow in various ways, including creating dashboards to illustrate historical trade information, a system to match the team’s equity trades with their credit trades, and a working orders blotter. Many aspects of my project were also non-technical, requiring communication with stakeholders to develop requirements and draft solution plans.
Man Group has been particularly welcoming to newcomers, offering plenty of opportunities to learn about projects and teams beyond my own. The various intern events were also a highlight of my time here.

During my internship, I joined the Discretionary Tech team, working from the Sofia, Bulgaria, office. I developed a dashboard to visualise historical trades and related statistics, whilst also integrating the app into launchpad. Both my team and the colleagues working in the Sofia office were incredibly welcoming, making me feel comfortable to ask questions and help me progress on my project. I was thrilled to meet so many inspiring people, across the firm.
The immense volume of data the firm processes daily was enlightening, underscoring the importance of data-driven decision-making and the advanced technology infrastructure needed to manage it efficiently. This internship was a remarkable learning experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such an innovative team.

During my internship, I worked with the Python Platform team on a project involving their “Spark Cluster”. This is an incredibly powerful interconnected group of compute cores and memory resources that dozens of people across the firm can use simultaneously to run large-scale data-processing tasks. Using Python, I developed a bot that monitors the cluster’s resource usage which notifies users when they haven’t requested the right amount of memory for their task and provides AI-generated suggestions to improve their code.
It's been a great opportunity to expand my practical knowledge and skills as a Software Engineer beyond what university teaches me, gaining experience with industry tools and getting involved at every stage of the deployment process. My team was always eager to teach and support me, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the training sessions and social events provided. In summary, a great summer experience!

This summer, I worked within the Responsible Investment (RI) Tech team, gaining great exposure to a variety of areas of Man Technology. I worked on projects such as developing a tool to explore company alignment with environmental and social factors, analysing large data frames, creating a dashboard for tracking carbon emissions, and assisting with a web interface for deploying dashboards to Man Group’s Kubernetes system.
This internship allowed me to learn how different technologies are used in companies like Man Group and I also gained insight into project management and balancing code "perfection" with speed of development.
The biggest challenge I faced was navigating unfamiliar large codebases. I tackled this by breaking them into small chunks and seeking help from my team, who were very helpful and patient.
It's been a great experience and I've learnt a lot about many different technologies.

I was fortunate to spend my summer internship within the Data Science team. My project involved processing alternative data for securities, developing computing statistics for them, and displaying this data in a dashboard. The dashboard allowed users to compare different vendor datasets and determine which were the most predictive for various KPIs for each security.
I really enjoyed my project as it allowed me to explore two completely different areas; data processing and UI development. Initially, I was a slightly worried that the sheer number of new tools and frameworks I would be exposed to might be overwhelming. However, thanks to the support provided by my mentor and the rest of the team, I was able to ease into my project at a good pace.
The skills which I developed during this internship will certainly be useful in future projects, whether it be writing high-quality production code, formulating effective unit tests, or personal skills such how to operate in a team and deliver good presentations. Events such as the Man Group summer party and the volunteering day were also extremely enjoyable. Overall, I'm really glad I was able to spend my summer here at Man Technology!
